Presented annually since 2004 to individuals from any country or region for exceptional achievement in the promotion of peace, democratic development, human rights and sustainable development. The award honours Giuseppe Motta (1871–1940), a Swiss politician who served five times as President of the Swiss Confederation and as President of the League of Nations.
